![]() ![]() ![]() Strathspeys are some of Steve's favorite tune types because they use the unique Scottish "snap" and combine it with the triplets and long-short rhythms of hornpipes to produce a very regal tune type. This 4/4 rhythm has the same meter as Reels, but is played with a l-o-n-g, short, l-o-n-g, short, bouncy rhythm rather than straight and even like the Reels. Slip Jigs are an interesting and fun variation on the jig rhythm and present a challenge for accenting and keeping the timing going, when the non-dominant hand is also providing accents on the alternating strong beats.Īnother traditional Celtic rhythm that is lots of fun to play is the Hornpipe. Here is the 2nd way to strum the jig strum, using your strong hand to produce both accents in every measure. After we develop our understanding we learn the first of two strum patterns to play Jigs. Now we turn our attention from the simple (duple) meter that powers Reels to the compound meter that is the core of Jigs. In this lesson we explore and try playing reels with a backbeat feel. Strategies for obtaining dynamics are also demonstrated for both out and in-strumming. Using "vocables", we learn how to strum with accents on the downbeats, that support the Reel-style tune.
